80 days to CAT 2012: Take your preparation pace to the next gear

The announcement of CAT 2012 on Wednesday, July 18, 2012 has appeared as a jolt to the CAT 2012 aspirants. If you were expecting the exam to start after October 20, as per the trend of the past two years, wake up to the reality. Two weeks of your preparation time has been lessened from your plan. But it is better to get buckled up now than to get panicked.
There are approximately 80 days left for CAT 2012. If you are a conscious MBA aspirant, you must move with or ahead of time. This article of MBAUniverse.com will guide you on managing your preparation in the remaining 80 days to CAT 2012.

The following steps would provide you the basic guidelines for cracking CAT 2012:

Move your preparation to the next level: By now you must have completed your basics. If you have not done it yet, you must hurry up and do it at the earliest.  Give a quick glance to the important areas in each of the sections. If you have just started your preparation, it is better to do a smart work. Identify the areas with the high probability of appearance in CAT 2012. Study the past years’ CAT analysis to know the areas. But there is a caveat. You might get questions from unusual topics at the test day. Just be cool and select the right questions.

Start taking mock tests: It is advised by the experts to start taking mock tests regularly. According to Arks Srinivas, CEO, VistaMind Education and ex Director, T.I.M.E., you should take at least one mock test every week and analyze them thoroughly. Do not get bogged down if your score is not high. Find out the areas of improvement and act accordingly. “Find out your weak areas, spend time on one weak area per week and then write the next Mock CAT. This should be your strategy of preparation,” he says.

Abhishek Gupta, Academic Head, Career Launcher suggests, “Taking tests will only help you revise better. It will also give you an idea about areas to concentrate on while revision. Take all kinds of tests – sectional and full length mocks. This will help you see what sections you need to work on more. Analyzing your performance in these tests is just as important. Get yourself a solved copy of the question paper and do a self analysis.”

Practice variety of questions: Practice as many types of questions as you can, This will give you a good exposure to all sorts of possible questions that you may encounter during CAT 2012. Once you have a good idea of the question types and develop a full fledged strategy, your time span of solving a question will reduce drastically. “Practice all kinds of questions. If you’ve covered everything, there is very little chance of getting caught unawares,” says Gupta.

Improve the duration of answering questions: You must attain a good speed of solving the questions, especially in the section of Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation, which involves calculation. You can attain this only by regular practice. “Set a strict deadline for yourself while attempting a question and try to stick by it as much as possible. For this you must be thorough with fractions, multiples and percentages,” says Nikhil Bansal, CAT expert, MBAUniverse.com mentor and an alumnus of IIM Lucknow.

Stay focused and have faith in yourself: Being motivated in the remaining few days to CAT 2012 should be on top of your to do list. Have faith in yourself that you will be successful in cracking CAT 2012. No matter how much you score in your mock CATs, never be demotivated. It is a given fact that your mock test scores won’t be very high in the initial stage of your preparation. So keep your motivation level high and stay focused in your preparation strategy. You still have good 80 days to go and a systematic approach towards CAT 2012 can work wonders for you. As Sai Ganesh, 99.99 percentiler in CAT 2011 and IIM Ahmedabad student says, “Focused preparation for three months is all that is necessary for cracking CAT 2012.”
