Quantitative Ability for CAT 2012: Tips to strengthen Algebra, Geometry & Number Theory

Quantitative Ability section is such an area, which is dreaded by many CAT 2012 aspirants. Even if you belong to the Engineering background would need lot of practice and preparation to get a good grip over the area which is otherwise considered to be very scoring.

The areas which is mostly faltered by majority of the CAT 2012 aspirants, especially those who are weak in Quantitative Ability are Algebra, Geometry and Number Theory. In this article of MBAUniverse.com, we will provide you expert guidance on how to prepare for these areas and excel at CAT 2012.

Algebra

Algebra is word problem where you have to comprehend the questions and reframe it mathematically. Algebra questions appear in the forms of Indices, Logs, Quadratic Equations and Progressions, Inequalities etc.  Arks Srinivas, CEO, VistaMind Education suggests, “Take a topic at a time and solve more 100 questions in each topic and you would be good.”

Gejo Sreenivasan, Principal Consultant, Career Launcher suggests, “If you are weak in Algebra, then while practicing, read the questions slowly, visualize the problem by drawing a diagram or a flowchart and then solve.”

Geometry

In Geometry, there are about 40 different sets of questions, hence you must prepare for the area and should not even think of leaving it out.  “Area based questions are a frequent type in Geometry, where dividing a regular figure into equal parts can help you arrive at the solution faster. Approximation is another tool you can use to eliminate wrong answer choices,” says Byju Raveendran, CAT expert and founder of Byju’s CAT Classes.

Sreenivasan suggests, “The best way to handle Geometry is to draw the figure to scale and then visually analyze the problem. In most of the cases you would be able to pick the right option.” You must know the similarity, congruency, angle-based and proportionality theorems in geometry in order to approach a problem

Number Theory

Number Theory is a major area in the Quantitative Ability section of CAT exam. Two trends which have been observed in CAT 2008 and 2009 regarding Number Theory are: (1) There were four to five questions from the topic and (2) all questions were based on either cyclicity or finding the last one or two digits. Practice is the only key to excel in this area.

Practice for perfection

As the saying goes, practice makes a man perfect. There is nothing under the sun which you cannot improve by practice. After taking the diagnostic tests, you will know where the problem lies. If you are conceptually weak, going back to the basics is what is suggested. You have to practice relevant chapters in which you are slow. According to experts, ideally, you should be able to attempt 10 to 12 questions without any mistake. Take a few tests to understand the kind of problems you find difficult. Accordingly, you can plan further.
