CAT 2012 likely to follow last year's exam pattern: Dr. Janakiraman Moorthy, CAT 2011 Convenor

CAT 2011 had seen an important change in terms of the pattern of the exam. While initially there were three sections, Quantitative Ability, Verbal Ability and Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning, the number of sections was reduced from three to two.  The two new sections are Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation and Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning.

Since CAT is famous for throwing surprises to the test takers, it will not be unexpected to see CAT 2012 undergoing another change in the pattern. To know about the chances of CAT 2012 undergoing any change, MBAUniverse.com spoke to Dr. Janakiraman Moorthy, CAT 2011 Convenor and the person behind this major change in CAT pattern

According to Dr. Moorthy, the pattern of CAT 2011 is likely to stay in CAT 2012 as well. “Yes, the pattern of CAT which we had introduced last year is likely to stay and it will be reviewed after sometime.”
But there are always some rooms for improvement, which might be implemented for CAT 2012 as well, as Dr. Moorthy emphasized while talking to MBAUniverse.com, “There are always some improvements possible and that is the character of CAT.”

Hence you should be prepared to face changes as well. But as has been mentioned by Dr. Moorthy, former CAT Convenor of the year 2011, there are chances that the pattern of CAT introduced last year would be continued.
Dr. Janakiraman Moorthy was the Convenor for CAT 2011. He had conducted a successful CAT in the computer based format and in the new pattern. He was a Professor in Marketing in IIM Calcutta. Recently Dr. Moorthy has been appointed as the Dean of IMT Dubai. He has also taught in IIM Lucknow.

Another unique feature which CAT 2011 introduced was the time bound sections. The exam would start with Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation, followed by Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning, each of 70 minutes duration. The CAT takers would not be allowed to move to and from between the two sections. However, they can move within the sections.

Talking about the rationale behind the change, Dr. Moorthy had stated, “The reason why we have reduced the number of sections from three to two is because we want proficient students at our IIMs, who would be equally competent in both Quantitative Ability as well as Verbal Ability. Till last year we have seen many students who had skewed efficiency.

The reason for making the sections ‘timed’ is that the CAT takers spend most of the time on their strong areas and lesser time on their weaker sections. This leads to a skewed score. They get high percentage owing to the fact that they have spent much time in their strong section, but on the other hand the sectional scores vary a lot. Keeping these facts in mind we have made these basic changes in the exam pattern.”
